Calyx Point 6.0

I have to say that Calyx Point is probably the most worthless software that I have ever come across. Calyx makes a software called Point, a loan origination software. it is very popular amongst mortgage companies and is one of the more ubiquitous software packages that does loan origination. The fact that it is widely used would make you think that it must be a good piece of software. No.

When installing Point locally on a computer, it works pretty well as intended. One of the main downfalls I have with this program is its lack of support for use in Terminal Server. From Point 6.0 System Requirements:

Note: Point is written to be compatible with Microsoft peer-to-peer and client/server networks. Calyx does not support data hosted on a storage device or the operation of Point on Novell networks, Linux, OS/2, UNIX, Windows 98, ME, or any thin-client networks such as Citrix or Microsoft Terminal Services.

It seems pretty ridiculous that a modern software package is not supported under Terminal Server. Either their developers are just absolute morons and can’t code it properly sandboxed or their customer support just doesn’t want to deal with helping people. My bet is the developers are just not coding it properly.

I’ve been trying to upgrade to Point 6.0 from Point 5.4 on a Terminal Server for one of my clients and have been unsuccessful. The problem is that when opening the application the window never shows. Bah to .NET Framework and Calyx.

Check out all the help I am getting on my problem on the inactive Calyx Message Boards:

It’s because they want you to buy their $2000 (plus $350 per year) Point Data Server. I’ve been trying to get this to work on a network drive…..

Hi Chris – I’m one of the developers at Calyx Software. Although I’m not part of the Point team, I work on other projects such as WebCaster, Point Central, etc…

I understand your frustration, but let me defend the Point developer, my co-workers. Point has been around since 1991 – there’s a lot of code and support for many features – you’re probably not even aware that these exist.

Explicit support for Citrix or Terminal Server has never been one of the features that have been requested (of the Point developers). We are a small company with only a handful of developers and our managers need to prioritize what features we work on depending on customer requests.

We are the leading LOS software for a reason: we put a lot of effort in research and implementation of complex mortgage related features – that’s what we do.

With that said, even though we don’t officially support Point deployed under Citrix or Terminal Server, many of us spend time (our own time) helping out customers in the Calyx Forums. Here’s for example a long thread started by a customer on installing Point on Terminal Server:

I see at least three Calyx employees trying to help out.

If Point has been around since 1991, I bet it is a monolith of code. What version control system does Calyx use?

I believe that Point is a great LOS software, even though I’m not in the loan business, many that I’ve met will swear by it.

It may be amazing on the outside — but still a scotch taped mess underneath…although only the developers know that, not me.

I’m not a hater, this post was just a little good ol’ IT frustration…

    Chris,

We are experiencing the same exact frustrations trying to get Point Data Server/Central working with Citrix. No support whatsoever which I find to be very worrisome since Citrix and Terminal Services isn’t exactly new, blazing technology!!

Curious of what came of your situation.

I am no longer working with Point, thank god! Based on what one of the Calyx developers said:

I would assume that there is no white light at the end of this tunnel. Get out while you still can! I’m not sure of the alternatives but I’m sure they exist. If I had the resources I would rewrite Point myself.
